Loan Requirements

Entrance Counseling/Promissory Notes

If you are awarded a campus-based (i.e., Perkins) or Emory private loan by the Office of Financial Aid, all promissory notes and required documents will be provided to you electronically by the Student Accounts and Billing Office through our third-party servicer Heartland/ECSI. You will receive an email directing you to the Heartland/ECSI website, where your promissory notes can be signed online.

This web account will remain with you for your entire history with Emory, including repayment.

The appropriate documents must be signed electronically before your loan can be disbursed to your student account.

Exit Interviews

Heartland/ECSI manages all of Emory’s loans. When a student with campus-based loans graduates or withdraws from Emory, the student will be notified to complete an electronic exit interview. The student will receive an email from Heartland/ECSI at the time of separation and be provided with an ID and password to the exit interview site.

Exit interviews are required for each borrower. Exit interview topics include, but are not limited to, the terms and outstanding balance of the loan held by the university; the borrower’s duty to repay the loan in accordance with the repayment schedule; and consequences of defaulting including, at a minimum, possible referral to a collection firm, reporting to a credit bureau, and litigation. Exit interviews also will provide the borrower’s rights and responsibilities under the loan.

These include:

  • The borrower’s responsibility to inform the university immediately of any change of name, address, telephone number, or Social Security number.
  • The borrower’s right to deferment or cancellation and the procedures for filing for those benefits.
  • The borrower’s responsibility to contact the university in a timely manner, before the due date of any payment he or she cannot make.

Students who have loan(s) with Emory and fail to complete their exit interview will have a hold placed on all university records.

Oxford continuees who plan to enroll at Emory’s main campus following graduation from Oxford will receive an exit interview email. This does not have to be completed until the student leaves Emory University. Please contact our office to discuss the removal of this requirement if you plan to continue your studies at Emory.
